Galway 2nds continued their pursuit of the Connacht Top Oil senior league title as they over came Greenfields 2nds it what proved to be a thrilling game of hockey at Dangan Regional sports centre last Friday evening. Galway 2nds who have a large number of outstanding fixutres due in large part to their successfull Irish Junior Cup run. Tensions were high prior to the match as Galway 2nds were without two of their more senior stars in shape of Christine Rabbitte and Emma Glanville, so the Galway 2nds were all u-18's apart from keeper Tara Browne, this however did not seem to phase the young chargers. While Greenfields dominated the early exchanges it was Galway who on their first attack managed to convert the chance to take the lead, while Greenfields renewed their efforts Galway sat back and soaked up the pressure. Galway then produce the first of three flowing moves which saw the inspirational Alison Hynes in the middle of the park combine with Deirdre Hatton, Lisa Geraghty and Niamh Walsh to find the back of the net. In fact Galway's attack spear headed by Eavan Murphy and their midfield supported by Michelle Carey produce some of the most exciting hockey of the season to leave the score at the interval 5-0 to Galway. While at the back Siobhain Hammon, Louise Thorton, Grainne Murphy and Freddie Timmins ensured that keeper Tara Browne had very little to do in the first half. Greenfields shell shocked by Galway's first half demolition job began the second half with renewed vigour, having the better of the early exchanges they managed to capitalise on a mistake in the Galway defence to reduce the deficit. Galway managed to secure another goal to increase their advantage again. The second half lacked the pace and free flowing hockey of the first half as both teams battle on, Greenfields managed to pull another one back. While Galway coach Richard Malone began to run his bench, Galway continued to press forward looking to increase their lead while Greenfields continue to attack at every opportunity. On the final whistle it was the impressive Freddie Timmins who scored from the final penalty corner of the game to ensure Galway retained their 5 goal advantage.
