Goalscorers: Alison Hynes 2, Roseanne Regan, Niamh Walsh, Eavan Murphy, Elaine Newell
The Top Oil Connacht Senior Ladies Cup got under-way on Saturday evening, despite the cold coniditions it didn't stop defending Champions Galway 2nd's sending out a clear message that they are not ready to relquish the cup they won the prevoius year. Missing some of their big guns a extremely young seconds team, took to the Dangan survice in a determined fashion, their objective was to secure a semi-final spot against Greenfields 1st the team they defeat last season in the same competition. A welcome addition to the squad was the inclusion of Alison Hynes who made her first start since returning from injury, her contribution to team was emense as she was industrious in midfield aided by Christine Rabbitte and Elaine Newell. However it was Hynes who made the most telling contribution as she scored two goals from her attacking midfield role. The deadlock had been broken earlier by Roseanne Regan who put Galway ahead following a long period of domination against the students. Such was Galway's domination that going in at half-time Keeper Tara Browne hadn't even touched the ball in the first half, leaving the score at the interval 4-0. Following a quick turn around the students began brightly taking the game to Galway, but before to long Galway began to dominate again with Niamh walsh score a great team goal as the ball move from Louise Thorton to Grainne Murphy and then into Hynes who became creator as she delievered a lovely thorough ball to Walsh who finished with a plum! So it was Eavan Murphy who put final nail in the cofin for the students as she returned to goal scoring form following a well worked short corner. The return leg is set for this Wednesday evening at 6:30pm as Galway 2nd's look to confirm their place in the semi-finals.
