Galway Hockey Club :8 Vs Sligo Hockey Club:1
Scorers: Elaine Newell 3, Tara Melvin2, Jessica Mc Nickan, Michelle Carey, Roseanne Regan
For the second week in a row Elaine Newell scored a hat-trick while propelling Galway 1sts to another enfantic league win as they dispatched a determined Sligo team. While Galway ran out easy winners Sligo proved to be difficult opponents, as Galway only lead by a single goal at the interval. Galway started brightly with Elaine Newell deflecting in a Lynsey Trainor drag flick to hand Galway an early lead. Galway struggle to find their best form on a bitterly cold day in sligo but there second came near the end of the first half as Michelle Carey found herself free in the Sligo 25 but with a defender ahead of her Carey, had a lot to do as she rounded the final defender before firing a bullett into the Sligo net from the top of the circle. Unfortunately following a quick restart Sligo caught Galway napping as they pulled one back, so as the teams headed into the interval Galway held a slim lead 2-1. Galway began the second half with a renewed vigour with the defence team of Sarah Melvin, Claire Heskin, Susan Joyce and Grace Melvin completely dominating the Sligo forwards and providing the ideal platform for Galway to launch repeated attacks. It wasn't long before Galway scored their third thanks to Elaine Newell, while Tara Melvin quick converted two one from Short corners following some excellent interplay between her and Lynsey Trainor left her with the easiest of chances to convert. The midfield trio of Alison Hynes, Tara Melvin and Lynsey Trainor really took the game to Sligo and were running at the defence causing problems all over the pitch. Roseanne Regan provide Galway's 6th reward for her industrious work rate thorough out the game, before Elaine Newell completed her Hatrick. But it was Galway's danger player Jessica Mc Nickan who duely wrapped things up for the Galway side as she cooly dispatched her chance.
