Galway 1st: 8 NUIG:0
Scorers: Elaine Newell (4), Lynsey Trainor, Grace Melvin, Roseanne Regan
Saturday evening saw Galway 1st take on NUIG in a tense league encounter at Dangan Regional sports centre, it was a must win encounter for last years champions if they wanted to stay in the title race. Galway started emphatically with Elaine Newell opening up the NUIG defence before calmly finishing in style, this proved to be the impetus to Galway as they continued to apply pressure to the NUIG defence. The Galway forward line of Meave Faherty, Elaine Newell and Roseanne Regan continually caused headaches for the NUIG and it wasn't long before the 2nd goal duly arrived following some excellent work by Tara Melvin, Grace Melvin and Lynsey Trainor in midfield as Regan capitalised on their great work. At the half-time interval Galway were leading 6-0 with Trainor getting on the score sheet with a beautifully deflected goal following some excellent work down the left by Grace Melvin. Elaine Newell double her total prior to the interval, while Grace Melvin added her own. Galway continued to up the tempo into the second half, while NUIG provided stiffer resistance Galway manage to added another two Goals with Elaine Newell getting Galway's first hat-trick of the season. Following a long delay due to an injury to Lynsey Trainor the game resumed with Galway closing out the game with a clean sheet, thanks mainly to an inspired defence performance from Deirdre Joyce, Freddie Timmins, Louise Thorton, Claire Heskin and Irish under 18 international keeper Emily Molloy. So this emphatic win keeps Galway in the hunt as we approach the end of the season.
