On Sunday November 16th, Galway under 16 A and B teams travelled to Athlone to face their Athlone Hockey Club counterparts.
The first match of the day saw Galway B team play Athlone B. With strong early play from both sides the match proved to be a tough contest from the very beginning but a quick break by Athlone saw Galway one nil down early in the first half. Galway continued to fight on and continuously kept the Athlone defence under pressure, however Athlone proved to be extremely strong on the attack and scored a further two goals with the game ending 3-0 to Athlone.
Galway A team continued their strong run of late with a decisive win over Athlone A. From the very beginning Galway proved to be the stronger team with their midfield and forwards on the constant attack; keeping the ball in the Athlone half for most of the match. The strength of the Galway team came from their quick passing and exploiting the space which ultimately paid off with Galway 5-0 up mid way through the first half. With little to do for much of the first half the Galway defence were taken by surprise when Athlone made a quick break before halftime, culminating in a goal. The second half continued much like the first with Galway again dominating their opponents. Getting the better of the Athlone defence, Galway scored some magnificent goals, both from open play and penalty corners for a final score of 10-2 to Galway.
Goal scorers on the day: Elaine Carey (4), Aoife Keaney (2), Ruth O’Sullivan (1), Rebecca Dillon (1), Saoirse McGrath (1), Emma Johnson (1)
