Galway 1st secured another victory over NUI Galway on Saturday evening, as they attempted to get their league campaign back on track. A beautiful autumn evening helped bring out the crowds to support the team and the fine weather seemed to affect the girls hockey as it was bright and inventive. Galway dominated the early exchanges with their midfield dominance proving to be the key factor as sisters Grace and Tara Melvin combined well with the talented Lynsey Trainor to create numerous attacking opportunities for the forwards. The Galway composed of Roseanne Regan, Maeve Faherty and Jessica Mc Nickan certainly seemed to cause the students no end of trouble. The deadlock was broken from a penalty corner attack which left Deirdre Joyce with the easiest of taps in to set the ball rolling. Having already taken the lead Galway continued to apply extensive pressure and a secondly duly arrived following a melvin combination at a penalty corner Grace deflected the ball home with a great touch. So by this stage Galway were cruising however shortly before half-time they were shocked back into life as NUIG broke down the right side of the pitch and following some poor marking from the Galway defence managed to slip a pass thorough to Aoife Hornibrook who duly applied the finish to shorten the gap. This Galway side however reacted in the best possible manner as they immediately struck back thorough Grace Melvin who ran from her own half and finish with a rocket to restore Galway’s two goal advantage. The 2nd half was a much quieter affair and the defences coming out on top with Sarah Melvin, Claire Heskin, Susan Joyce and Deirdre Joyce ensure that Galway had no more mishaps. So next on the agenda for the 1st is a stern test against an unbeaten Galway 2nds team.
