Top Oil Connacht Champions Galway Ladies 1st came crashing back to earth last weekend, as they were soundly beaten by Greenfields 1st in the opening match of the season. This was always going to a tough opening fixture as the rivalry between the club's is comparable to that of other great derby's around the world. Unfortunately for Galway having come through a relatively good pre-season campaign the 2-0 score line told the truth, Greenfields on the day had taken their chance's while Galway failed to convert any of theirs. Galway's day was made even worse with the news that inspirational centre half Sarah Melvin was unavailable and might be for some while, needless to say young Freddie Timmins step into the breach. After the game coach Richard Malone described the loss as simply "They wanted more than us!". So this has certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons early this season as the real chase for the Crown heats up.
