Smith Cup Match Report
Galway Hockey Club Under 16 team participated in the Smith Cup tournament on Sunday 21st Sep. The first match saw the team drawn against Knocknacara. With a particularly young squad, the first match saw many of Galway’s players playing together as a team for the first time and, despite a particularly strong effort from their midfields, the lack of match practice cost the team, who eventually lost to Knocknacara 4-0.
The first match served as a great exercise in team play for the girls with Galway gaining an early lead in their second match against Athlone after some great play between Galway’s mids and forwards. This early play set the tone for the rest of the match with Galway dominating play throughout. Some excellent passing and running off the ball culminated in a further five goals for Galway; all from open play. In particular, movement by the forwards resulted in goals for each of Galway’s forward line; Elaine Carey, Rebecca Dillon and Siabh Gavin. In the mid field Freddie Timmins and Michelle Carey both produced superb performances; each making and scoring a goal. With a final score of 6-0 to Galway, the team proved that they are capable of making a real play for this season’s Under 16 league title.
