Galway 3 10-1 Athlone 2
Galway’s third senior team continued on the winning streak that Galway’s seniors are enjoying with their second win in a row and again the third GHC senior team win of the weekend.
Galway were dominant throughout the game and Athlone provided little opposition. Siobhan Forde opened the scoring midway through the first half and this started the floodgates. Tracey Murphy added a second following a great move down the right from Aoife Cunningham. Siobhan added her second before half time following some classic weaving through midfield. The second half, Athlone were pinned into their circle. Norah Folan and Gail Russell both scored from short corners before Tracey Murphy scored her second and Ann Moylan added the seventh. Tracey Murphy scored her hat-trick following a goal mouth scramble. The final two goals were scored by Fiona O’Connor who worked her way from midfield through to the goals on both occasions.
This was a great display from the Galway thirds. Goalkeeper Michaela Van der Walt was dictating from the back. The defence of Barbara Sheehan, Bethan Davies, Aoife Cunningham and Fiona O’Connor easily dealt with anything that came their way. Midfielders Erris Burke, Meriel FitzSimon, Norah Folan were dominant and forwards, Siobhan Forde, Tracey Murphy and Ann Moylan were constantly creating gaps and scoring chances. Substitutes Gail Russell and Ruth Fennelly all played their part in this game.
Two wins out of two for the start of the 2011/2012 season. Galway thirds next game is against Renmore 2 in Mervue next Sunday. Can they make it three in a row
