Galway 2nds also got there season off to a winning start against Yeats County with an emphatic 4-nil victory on Sunday afternoon in Dangan.
Captain Emma Glanville lead from the defence but it was also Emma who got the scoring underway. It was created by great play early on in the Yeats circle by the Galway attacking line of Rebecca Dillon, Aoife Codyre and Clare-Ann Irwin to win 2 short corners. Emma forced a good save from the keeper on the first Short corner but neatly slotted the 2nd into the bottom corner. This was a great boost for the young side as Yeats started the stronger. Great offensive passing by Galway forced another short corner which was expertly deflected in by Aoife Codyre after the initial shot seemed to be going wide. An injury for Meave Russell forced her off which allowed the Yeats team to get on top for a good period until Galway settled again. Yeats did win a couple of short corners but inspired defensive play by Sarah Johnson and Hannah Gormley meant it Stayed 2-nil until half time.
From the first whistle of the 2nd half Galway were on top, keeping Yeats pinned in their own half for nearly the rest of the game. Galway’s passing and movement were sublime and with Ruth O Sullivan seeming to be everywhere at once, which gave Yeats hardly any chances to create an attack from midfield. Then a moment of composure and class from Clare-Ann inside the Yeats circle allowed Sadbh Gavin to neatly slot the ball passed the keeper who had been playing well. Galway’s midfield always seemed to be a constant threat with Orna Cunningham’s passing that unlocked the Yeats defence time and again. Yeats broke free on a few occasions and used the space in the Galway half wisely but Ailbhe Nally in the Galway goal kept her concentration and also kept Yeats out with some fine saves. Galway’s passing was just too much for Yeats and with Aoife Codyre and Rebecca Dillon in sparkling form it wasn’t long before Galway Scored again. Sadbh Gavin once again was on the end of a fine move to tap the ball into an open goal. Making the score 4-nil and that’s how it stayed until the end of the game.
A fantastic result and performance which will undoubtedly give the team the foundation of confidence to go-on and do very well this season.
