Galway 3 continue on the winning streak for GHC teams at the start of the new season.
Galway 3’s first game of the season was against Renmore 1 in Mervue. Renmore although short a few players from last season as the baby boom hit their team, however, there are still plenty of experience there with Yvette Quinn, Breda Guilfoyle and Ciara Delaney.
Galway had the experienced heads of Norah Folan, Barbara Sheehan, Tracey Murphy, Ann Dempsey, Siobhan Forde, Emilie Keogh and Meriel FitzSimon, but they welcomed their up and coming stars of Gemma Rhatigan, Jennifer Farrell, Niamh Halloran, Michaela Van der Walt, Aoife Cunningham and Catherine Clancy. The mixture of youth and experience once again paid off for Galway 3 with Galway coming out with a 1-0 win.
The game started nervously as both sides struggled to get into their stride with this being the first game of the new season for both teams. However, Galway settled the quicker and started to dominate with Siobhan Forde breaking continuously down the right for Galway. Mid way through the first half, saw Ann Dempsey break down the right from where she passed the ball to the top of the circle, where quick passing between Gemma Rhatigan and Meriel FitzSimon saw the ball switched to the left where Tracey Murphy swept the ball home.
Galway continued to attack the Renmore circle and came close on occasion but the Renmore Goalkeeper was very strong and did well with what came her way.
Renmore attacked more in the second half. However, Galway’s Barbara Sheehan was strong and dominant in defence. Jennifer Farrell came more into the game and often turned defence into attack as she relished her new role as an attacking midfielder and combined well with Gemma Rhatigan in attack to come close on more than one occasion. However, Renmore’s defence could not be broken for a second time and they were happy to end the game with just the one goal deciding the game.
Galway 3’s next game is against Athlone 2 on Sunday 2nd October in Dangan at 11.00 am.
