Galway 2nds 1 - Elaine Carey
Sligo 1st 0
Following Sunday's firsts match the Galway 2nds attempted to kick start their season as they took on Sligo in their second competitive fixture of the season. The Galway 2nds team this time was much changed as they welcomed back Emma Glanville and Elaine Carey into the squad for the challenge of sligo. As the rain began to fall the game started sluggishly, with both sides failing to get into any real rythm which became a trend thorough out the match. It was Galway who created the early chances thanks to some good work from Ciara Bourke and Roseanne Regan, however they failed to take full advantage of the opportunities, it was evident that the team lacked the cutting edge from last year which Eavan Murphy and Niamh Walsh provided. While the influential Christine Rabbitte pull the strings in midfield Galway could never find that killer pass while both Michelle Carey and Kate O'Callaghan were industrious beside her. Sligo were not without their open chance's only thanks to some excellent defending from Emma Glanville and Louise Thorton helped ensure that Connacht U-18 keeper Natasha Cooke have a relative quiet first half. It was another Connacht and Irish U-16 star Elaine Carey who brought the game to life with a moment of genius as she lift the ball between two Sligo defenders before driving thorough to finish with a plum. It was a goal that would of been worthy of winning any match was the spark Galway needed, however the team failed to ignite. So the game continued with coach Richard Malone ringing the changes as Aoife Cunningham, Siobhan Hammon and Sarah Johnson and all entered the fray. The real work on the day was predominately carried by the forwards with the impressive Niamh Codyre, Hazel Gilligan showing the potential to fill the gap left by the afore mention players. So the contest ended one nil to Galway 2nds who will now face a sterner test as they face Church of Ireland 2nds in the Irish Junior cup.
