Catholic Inst 2 Galway HC 0

In the gloroious autumn sunshine Galway HC opened their Examiner Cup campaign at home to Limerick side Catholic Inst. in what proved to be a action packed match at Dangan regional sports centre. Diaster struck early for Galway as influential midfielder Jessica Mc Nickan had to make a visit to the A&E department following a scramble in the Insituite circle. The loss of Mc Nickan forced coach Richard Malone to move Louise Conlon into the right midfield berth before moving Lynsey Trainor back in to that her favoured position. Galway certainly started the brighter of the two sides and early pressure resulted in three short corner however galway failed to capitalise on these while at the other end the impressive centre back partnership of Timmins and Melvin exhibited composure xceeding their tender years. So as the half drew to a clos a clumsey tackle by central midfielder Tara Melvin saw the young star see yellow and forced more pressure on Galway. Galway managed to hang on till half time which saw the sides go in level at the break. Following the interval however good insitiutie pressure resulted in another short corner and for the first time in the match Keeper Emily Molloy's goal was breached  as ex-irish international Elaine Brommel manage to converted a well worked short corner routine. Galway still struggling with the loss of Melvin continued to search for an equaliser. Following great work from Niamh Walsh, Louise Fahy and Eavan Murphy combining to create another great Galway chance. Unfortunately that was the end of Galway's luck as an excellent break down the right from Catholic insituite's youth international Naomi Carroll result in the Galway defence being sliced apart leaving keeper Emily Molloy completely stranded. So a deflated Galway struggled to pull a goal back but unfortunately time ran out for Galway as they pushed forward. So while the result might not have been what coach Richard Malone was looking for, its worth nothing that Galway are extremely young and still have more to offer thorough out the season.
