Often the opening game of the new season is greeted with great anticipation, but unfortunately for both Galway sides the season began with the 1st team take on a weakened 2nds team at the Dangan regional sports centre this evening. For the 1st team there was a desire to set down the marker for the forth coming season. While the 2nds buoyed by their Connacht Cup final victory over the 1sts were full of confidence and headed into the tie with a desire to keep their winning streak over the 1sts. Fresh from her Connacht U-18 debut the impressive Natasha Cooke started in goals for the 2nds replacing Tara Browne from last years team, while there ware also debuts for Katie O'Callahan, Rachel Cloonan and Hazel Gilligan. For the 1st team there were plenty of changes from last season, the loss of Deirdre Joyce has paved the way for the impressive Freddie Timmins to claim a starting spot. While Eavan Murphy, Niamh Walsh and Alison Hynes have all made the jump from 2nds to the 1st team this season. However it wasn't meant to be the 2nds evening as the 1st ran away with a victory with Captain Meave Faherty, Eavan Murphy and Lynsey Trainor all scoring 2 goals a piece to hand the opening days win to the 1st.
